Relieve poor digestion and promote good digestion
Almost everybody experiences digestive discomfort or poor digestion at one time or another. Sometimes the causes are as simple as eating food that doesn’t agree with us or food we aren’t accustomed to. Other times, our digestion may be upset by stressful situations, or as an unavoidable side-effect of medication.
The human digestive system relies on colonies of friendly bacteria to function properly. These friendly bacteria — like Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium animalis live in the digestive tract, favouring the growth of healthy intestinal flora and converting some components of food into valuable vitamins that your body can use.
Populations of these friendly gut bacteria are vulnerable to factors like alcohol consumption and digestive disturbances such as diarrhoea. Antibiotics can also cause problems for them, as they can kill friendly bacteria along with the harmful bacteria they are prescribed for.
Reduced levels of friendly bacteria may be indicated by symptoms such as flatulence or gas, or a feeling of bloating. And for women, an imbalance of friendly bacteria can sometimes promote yeast overgrowth.
